Experience, background and philosophy

Russ Vince is Professor Emeritus at the School of Management, the University of Bath. He was Professor of Leadership and Change at the School (2007 – 2021); and Associate Dean (Research) from January 2011 to December 2013. His research investigates the emotional and political dynamics of organising, as well as the impact of these dynamics on learning, leadership and change. Russ's specific research interests are in the application of systems psychodynamic theory to organisations and organising, emotions in organisations and institutions, organisational paradox, management learning and education, the organisation of reflection, and organisational learning and leadership.

His books include Managing Change, (Policy Press, 1996); Group Relations, Management and Organisation (Oxford University Press, 1999); Rethinking Strategic Learning, (Routledge, 2004); Organising Reflection (Ashgate, 2004); and the Handbook of Experiential Learning and Management Education (Oxford University Press, 2007). He has published over two hundred academic and scholarly papers, chapters and reviews, including publications in: The Academy of Management Review, Human Relations, Organisation Studies, the Journal of Management Studies, the British Journal of Management, Management Learning and the Academy of Management Learning and Education. In December 2013 Russ received the Dean’s Award for an Outstanding Contribution to Research.

Russ is Honorary Professor in Management at the University of St Andrews, Scotland. He is an Academic Staff Member of the National Institute for Organisational Dynamics Australia (NIODA), where he teaches the Research Design and Methods module of NIODA’s PhD degree. Russ is a former Editor-in-Chief of the international academic journal Management Learning (2005 – 2010) and he served as Associate Editor for the Academy of Management Learning and Education (AMLE) journal (2017 – 2020). He has been a member of the International Editorial Boards of the following academic journals: Academy of Management Learning and Education, Organisation Studies, Management Learning, Socio-Analysis, Human Resource Development Quarterly, and Action Learning: Research and Practice. Russ is an internationally recognised expert in emotions in organisations, systems psychodynamics, management learning, organisational learning and critical action learning. He has led the development of teaching in Business and Management Schools from a systems psychodynamic perspective.
