Course Details

The NIODA Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) by thesis is a degree offering candidates the opportunity to develop high level research skills.

As a PhD candidate, you are required to make a significant original contribution to the field of systems psychodynamics by submitting a written research thesis, of between 80,000 to 100,000 words.

Consistent with the AQF Level 10, a PhD candidate is expected to:

  • engage in critical reflection, synthesis and evaluation

  • develop, adapt and implement research methodologies to extend and redefine existing knowledge

  • disseminate and promote new insights to peers and the community

  • generate original knowledge and understanding to make a substantial contribution to the field of system psychodynamics.

NIODA believes that the learning and teaching of systems psychodynamics is assisted by the creation of an environment where staff and candidates have certainty around expectations. This in turn informs NIODA’s pedagogical approach. These expectations are that:

  • candidates are mature adult learners with extensive work experience

  • a safe learning environment is created for candidates by all NIODA staff

  • thoughtful critique and the development of creative alternatives to orthodox theory and methods is supported

  • teaching staff feel supported and validated in their work.

Candidates’ research is informed by leading-edge theory and applied methods relevant to systems psychodynamics.

PHD GRADUATE 2025

My PhD was a deep dive into a complex issue that has concerned me for a long time. It was a rewarding, collaborative and relational journey of personal self development through interesting academic theory and practical methodology to new knowledge. The journey involved deep reflection where I came to understand much more about, not just the complex issue I researched, but also my own strengths, values, projections, hypocrisies and even my own power and influence. My supervisor showed persistent guidance, patience and generosity of spirit, as I was both challenged and supported. Her faith in me and the value of the research I was doing constantly gave me the reassurance I needed during challenging times. Whilst a PhD is a laborious personal journey at your own pace, the regular cohort catch ups were helpful and encouraging. NIODA was incredibly supportive and responsive and there was a real sense of community behind me, which I will be forever grateful for. Through the research I have developed some wonderful life long relationships and networks. I would recommend the NIODA PhD degree to anyone with a master’s in systems psychodynamics (or similar discipline) who wants a more personal touch with a very supportive community of academics to guide the way.
